What is novel food?

Novel food as such is not really new – throughout history we have added new foods to our diets or introduced new ways of preparing food. As this process continues, consumers need to be sure that any novel food coming to their tables is safe. It is EFSA’s role to carry out a scientific risk assessment of novel food and traditional food from third countries before they are introduced to the EU market.
